These pictures of damage to the northern boreal forests, ending with a red sunset caused by soot from forest fires, offer some idea of the severity of the degredation these forests are suffering around the world. What is the long term consequence? The carbon stored in the defoliated trees in the second picture will likely be permanently sequestered in a peat bog. That is a very good thing. On the other hand the carbon shown as stored in the first picture will almost certainly find its way directly into the atmosphere as is happening in the two pictures of forests fires. There is now so much soot in the air from this year's forest fires that we should accustom ourselves to the red sunsets caused by the soot in the air.
